Additional fees for mud cleaning/retuning and rock damage:
Mud, clay and wet sand require a lengthy, careful cleaning with soap and water, lubing and retuning. We charge an additional $20 for this service after each muddy ride. We do not cancel rides for wet weather, unless conditions are dangerous, so expect to pay this rental fee if we ride in the rain or through repeated creek crossing. If you request Flat Pass or Onion Creek rides, these trails both require a clean-up fee.
Most popular Moab rental bike damage: Rock hits derailleur.
How it happens: You bump the rear derailleur on a rock at speed and probably don't realize you hit a rock or tossed a rock into the rear derailleur. The rear derailleur hanger is meant to bend to absorb impacts without damaging the rear derailleur, so it bends slightly. Shifting gets funky and/or the chain will skip or click, but not to a great degree, so you don't stop. When you shift hard into the lowest rear cog, the chain drops into the spokes behind the cassette because of the bent hanger. If you don't stop immediately, all the spokes on the drive side are burred or severed. In either case, they must be replaced. Because this is such a common and completely preventable mechanical problem, each bike's drivetrain is checked after every ride for alignment and the rear derailleur set to stop at the last cog. To make sure the bike is shifting correctly we ask you to pedal and shift through the gears in the staging area prior to departure. Whatever happens on the trail is your responsibility. To fix such damage done to a rear wheel we charge $75. That is $25 for spokes and nipples and $50 for labor to rebuild the wheel. Remedy: Listen to the bike. Stop IMMEDIATELY if you are experiencing shifting problems. If you ride through a boulder field, stop and check the rear shifting before traveling on. Don't just hunker down and ride through a shifting problem! Tell your guide!!
2nd most popular rental bike damage:
How it happens: One way is by laying a bike down on a slickrock slope and letting it slide down. Or, you have been riding the slickrock for a while and discovered how grippy it is and you trust the tires a bit too much on a sidehill. The tires loose their grip and you step off on the uphill side and let the bike slide. This scapes the sides of the pedals (not a problem) and/or the side of the fork (could be a serious problem). The fork is made of magnesium that is easily filed away. If you scuff up a fork to the extent that seal fittings are compromised, the legs must be replaced. If you slide down on the drive side, you may damage the rear derailleur and can expect the above "rock hits the derailleur" situation, as well. There is a $100 minimum fee for fork damage that compromises the strength or maintenance proceedures of forks in any way.
Rental bikes must be reserved at least a week prior to use. No refunds on used equipment. Shipping and handing fees are NOT included in any listed sales prices unless stated.
